Back in July 2023, West Siphonics Systems was appointed to design, supply and install the Siphonic rainwater drainage to a new development in Lutterworth. The project comprised of 3 Nr large warehouses equating to a vast gross internal area of over 56,000m2 or, 603,000 square feet in old money!

Our scope of works also included the Siphonic rainwater drainage to the office areas, where all internal pipework was thermally insulated to prevent condensation from forming on the pipework in the warm office spaces.

The Siphonic design consisted of both primary and secondary systems. On 2 of the 3 units, it was possible to discharge all the water to one end of the building. This resulted in a large saving in terms of underground drainage requirements and subsequently, improving on the initial construction programme timescales.

Over 6,000 metres of pipework were installed and the project was completed in December 2023.

Magna Park Corby is one of the UK’s largest dedicated logistics and distribution parks.

The MPC2 and MPC3 site contains two smartly dressed warehouses, each with over 590,000 square foot of floor space.

The Siphonic roof drainage consists of seven primary & secondary systems on both sides of the warehouse draining the roof of over 50,000m2.

As part of the project over 10km of pipework was fabricated and installed to drain a collective 6,832 litres of water per second from the roof.

The stunning V&A Museum Dundee stands partly on the banks of the mighty River Tay, and partly in the River Tay. The iconic building is the work of award-winning Japanese architects Kengo Kuma & Associates, and was designed as a way of reconnecting the city to its historic River Tay waterfront.

West Siphonics designers worked closely with the project design engineers to produce a custom built siphonic roof drainage system to work within the curving concrete walls (there are no straight external walls) which create the appearance of a Scottish cliff face.

Low and Zero Carbon Technologies identified the latest direct and renewable energy sources for the £80m Museum.

ICON 2 is strategically located at Manchester Airport City in close proximity to the World Freight Terminal. West Siphonics modelled 3344m of Siphonic pipework in 3D to produce a working BIM model of the design to aid coordination. The 260m long warehouse is drained via Primary downpipes located at one end of the building and Secondary systems split to each end.

Vaccines Manufacturing and Innovation Centre (VMIC)

West Siphonics has been selected to develop the Siphonic Roof drainage scheme for the new Vaccines Manufacturing Centre in Didcot, Oxford. This state-of-the-art building will benefit from our industry leading design with both Primary and Secondary siphonic rainwater drainage systems offering the greatest protection to the building and its invaluable contents. West Siphonics will Design, Manufacture and install 1400m of pipework to drain a total of 410 litres per second from the roof.

The rapid acceleration of this 7000 square-metre building due to the current Covid -19 pandemic means the doors will now open 12 months ahead of the scheduled date in 2022. Works began on the site at the Harwell Campus in early April, West Siphonics will commence with the installation of the systems in July.

This impressive site contains a 1,000,000 square foot warehouse and a multi-storey staff car park. The main warehouse roof consists of 2 eaves gutters & 14 valley gutters, the roof is also hip ended. The total roof area is approximately 91,950 m2, based on the specified rainfall intensity and geographical location of the project, this equates to a staggering 5,300 litres of rainwater per second falling onto the warehouse roof during peak storm conditions.

Due to the vast amount of water on the warehouse roof and external yard area, your typical surface water underground drainage network would simply not suffice. Therefore, approximately 1.5 Kilometres of Ø2800mm (yes, 2.8-metre diameter pipe!) was installed underground around the full perimeter of the warehouse to cope with the extreme volume of water.

The development consists of the following:

The Siphonic roof drainage consists of primary & secondary systems. On a typical project, the secondary systems would discharge 500mm above external FFL onto hardstanding. On this occasion West Siphonics was asked to run the secondary systems underground alongside the primary systems into the underground drainage network – this was due to the external yard drainage being unable to cope with the potentially high volume of water being discharged onto it. In some cases, the Ø2800mm underground pipework is over 40 metres away from the perimeter of the building. We were able to build this into our Siphonic calculations which meant our pipework could run fully Siphonic all the way out to the discharge point, negating the need for a fall on the pipework as would be necessary with a traditional gravity-fed pipe.

West Siphonics produced 3D Revit models as per the project BIM requirements and attended several coordination/clash detection meetings to ensure our systems were fully co-ordinated with other services prior to our start on site.

In conclusion, West Siphonics are very proud to be a part of this prestigious project. We are happy to report that our site installation teams are progressing well on-site and are on target to hit programme.
